History of the Rotary Club, Singleton
The Rotary Club of Singleton Inc. was chartered on 16 February 1940 with 30 members, and it was the first service club in Singleton.
The Club has a proud record of achievement, and from its inception has played its part in the various avenues of service to which Rotary is dedicated. Hundreds of organisations and persons throughout Singleton and its district, have benefited from the help given by Rotary, sometimes by financial assistance, and others by active participation in the projects concerned. |
By virtue of its composition of representatives of most of our business vocations, the Club is in a unique position to advise on projects and problems and this counsel has been gladly given when this has been asked.
Today, Singleton Rotary Club has 32 members. That membership base is made up of men and women of all ages, who enjoy giving back to the community. The camaraderie is strong and lifelong friendships are made. |
Witmore Garden Project:#MakingADifference
Our Club used the expertise of members to assist Witmore Enterprises undertake a project that was of benefit to staff and clients. Witmore Enterprises is a not for profit charitable organisation that provides disability support services including employment to disabled people from the Singleton district. The job consisted of excavating a garden area including removing a tree and placing 150 mm depth of concrete between a kerb and the existing concrete pavement adjacent to the main building. The new paving allowed the Witmore buses to reverse into an existing parking area and to discharge their wheelchair bound clients on to the newly paved area for easy access to the building. |
Grave Restoration Project: April 2017Service to the Singleton Community
Our Club is undertaking the restoration of the graves of Singleton’s founder, Benjamin Singleton at Whittingham Cemetery and Singleton’s first Mayor, Alexander Munro, at Glenridding Uniting Church Cemetery. Financial support from Glencore allowed the restoration to proceed. |
RYDA Road at TocalRotarian Ted Drayton as Project Manager ensured the successful construction of the purpose built road for the RYDA Stopping Distance demonstration at Tocal Agricultural College. Construction consisted of subbase gravel covering geotech fabric followed by a two coat seal with the first coat being 14 mm and second being 10mm aggregate.
RYDA is designed for 16-18 year old students and is a series of workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety. As part of an interactive one-day experience, students experience braking at different speeds (on our purpose built road), devise travel strategies that will work for them and get tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. |

Our Santa Fun Run will commence at 5.30pm. All participants are encouraged to dress in costume. Entries will be taken on the day from 4:00pm, but we encourage people to enter prior. Men's Health Education Rural Van (MHERV)
A customised van built by Singleton Rotarian and owner of Customised Mine Services, Warren Deaves will be used to promote men's health around NSW. Warren has spent around 180 hours of his own time fabricating MERV and because of this the project cost just under $20,000 as opposed to the $41,000 originally quoted. Warren recently handed over the purpose built van to Rotary District Governor, Brian Atkins, in front of fellow Rotarians who gathered to acknowledge the generous contribution Warren had made to ensuring rural men can access the help and advice they need to stay healthy.
The MERV van is a mobile check-up and information service that travels to work places and community sites throughout the western area of our Rotary District. Men can have their blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels checked followed by a discussion with a community nurse about men's health issues. The MERV van is funded and manned by Rotary for the community and will be based in Narromine.
District Governor Brian presented Warren with a certificate of appreciation for the design, fabrication and completion of Rotary District 9670's new Men's Education Rural Van.

Renovation of the Girl Guide HallThe Guide Hall renovations, our Club's major project for the year, are progressing well. Our Club has donated $10,000 towards the construction of the wheelchair ramp with access to the front door, the replacement of the front doors with an emergency exit door and minor repairs of interior walls which were cracked during the re-piering of the building. The total cost of the work is approximately $23,000. Girl Guides have raised the balance through fundraising and generous donations from community groups, businesses and the local community. The ramp has now been completed with the exception of the handrails which will be installed in the near future.
We are now organising a Rotary working bee to extend the existing concrete path to the bottom of the wheelchair ramp and place slats across the front piers finishing at the ramp. |
Youth Driver Awareness ProgramGetting behind the wheel of a car as a young driver is said to be the most dangerous thing that a person will do in their entire life. The RYDA Program equips young people with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe on the roads.
This year, 180 senior students from Singleton High School and St Catherine's Catholic College attended the program which was held at Singleton Show Ground on 7 August. The stopping distances demonstration proved the most popular session with students surprised at how far a vehicle travelled after the brakes had been applied. The last RYDA Program was held at Singleton Showground on 4 June 2012. In attendance were 158 students and 7 teachers who were impressed with the subject matter and the quality of the presenters. The day was judged to be an outstanding success. |
ANZAC Day BBQ
Our Club catered the ANZAC Day BBQ for the community on behalf of the Singleton RSL Sub-Branch. The weather was perfect and there was a large crowd attending the commemorations. Money collected on the day will be donated to Legacy.
Try A Skill day at Singleton Showground
The Try a Skill day at Singleton Showground proved a highly successful event with Year 9 and 10 students hearing from 51 exhibitors who showcased their various trades to the students.
Our Club fed more than 400 participants with impressive speed and efficiency and have been presented with a commemorative plaque from the World Skills Organisation

Annual Cubby House RaffleOur 2012 Cubby House raffle was was won by a very deserving local family. Our thanks go to Rotarian Geoff Williams for his time and effort to construct another cubby house for the annual Club raffle.
This prize has raised an enormous amount for our Club's community service funds over Geoff's many years of undertaking this project. |
Guide Hall RepairSingleton Girl Guide Hall is an important part of the Singleton community. The hall was erected on it's current site in York Street in 1960 with the help of various community groups including the Rotary Club of Singleton.
When the Girl Guides approached our Club for assistance with the repiering of the hall and the addition of a ramp to provide disabled access to the hall the members of our Club were happy to help. The first stage incorporating project managing the repiering of the hall and rectifying the drainage problems under the hall has been completed. The second stage of the renovations which involves the construction of a ramp and replacement of the old entrance doors will be underway shortly. |
